Climb to New Heights: Hotel AWA Introduces Guided Volcano Adventures
in Chile’s Lakes Region

Guests ascend to 8,400 feet by day and return
lakeside for dinner by night

Snow-dusted peaks, glacial lakes, and dense forests define Chile’s enchanting Lakes Region, but nothing captures its natural drama quite like the volcanoes that rise above the landscape. Now, guests of Hotel AWA, a modern luxury retreat on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, can experience these geological wonders up close with new guided Volcano Excursions that promise breathtaking views by day and serene comfort by night.

From gentle ascents through ancient forests to exhilarating glacier crossings, each small-group adventure is led by Certified Mountain Guides, ensuring both safety and a deep connection to the land and its stories.

“Volcanoes, geologically and culturally, shape our region,” says Mauricio Fuentes, General Manager of Hotel AWA.  “We wanted to create a way for guests to experience their power and beauty in a meaningful, personal way — and then return to the warmth and relaxation of Hotel AWA in the evening.”

Hotel AWA’s Three Volcano Excursions
  • Osorno Volcano: A Journey Through Legends and Enchanted Scenery
Rising high at 8,700 feet (2,652 meters) on the far side of Lake Llanquihue, Osorno offers physically demanding yet technically moderate challenges. The total ascent is 1,500 meters. After a two-hour climb, guests reach a Glacier Station for sunrise views before continuing to the summit. According to legend, Osorno once raged uncontrollably until the sacrifice of a pure-hearted woman named Licarayén calmed its fury. Her heart, devoured by a condor atop a sacred mountain, caused snow to fall and the volcano to fall quiet — a story etched into the soul of the region.
  • Osorno Glacier Excursion
Osorno’s most striking feature is its mountain glacier, shaped by environmental forces into natural ice formations called seracs. This physically demanding, moderately technical excursion includes a 3,000-foot (900-meter) elevation gain and stunning views of the Southern Andes.
  • Casa Blanca Volcano: In the Heart of the Lacustrine Andes
Surrounded by dense forests and glistening lakes, Casa Blanca Volcano offers the best panoramic views of the Southern Andes. Moderately demanding with easy-to-moderate technical difficulty, this day-long excursion covers a 3,080-foot (940-meter) elevation gain, with highlights including the Raihuén Crater and a summit at 6,500 feet (1,990 meters).
Adventure Meets Luxury

Whether tackling a challenging summit or savoring a moderate ascent, guests return to Hotel AWA in time for a lakeside dinner at AWA Restaurant, where locally inspired cuisine celebrates the bold flavors of southern Chile.

Each Volcano Excursion is included in Hotel AWA’s All-Inclusive Rate, which also covers hiking, kayaking, cycling, and immersive cultural experiences. After a day outdoors, guests can relax in the hotel’s contemporary spaces — from the spa and indoor pool to the fireplace lounge — all with sweeping views of the volcano-studded landscape.
