explora Patagonia will reopen on December 9, 2020 explora Atacama and explora Valle Sagrado on December 21, 2020 53 full-time guides trained at explora’s School of Guides lead explorations of the remote regions of the continent
To explore the remote regions of South America many soft adventure travelers rely on guides. explora has the finest soft adventure guides in the remote regions of the continent for a reason: It selects the best candidates and offers comprehensive training to ensure they deliver “the art of travel” as only explora can.
The company currently counts 53 full-time guides to lead travelers on explorations at explora destinations in Patagonia, the Atacama Desert, and Easter Island of Chile; Valle Sagrado in Peru; and El Chaltén in Argentinian Patagonia. Guides also lead explora Travesías – that is, journeys – between Atacama and the Uyuni Salt Flat in Bolivia, and in Salta in the Andes of Argentina.
The route to guiding for explora is rigorous, including enrollment in explora’s School of Guides requiring two-and-a-half months of practical and theoretical training in the field. The program is all-encompassing with training in ornithology, equestrian, trekking, local communities, cartography, astrology, hospitality, and conservation, as well as leading travelers safely and securely through wilderness via GPS. Aspiring guides must also earn certification as a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) to possess the essential knowledge and skills to provide necessary aid to travelers in worst-case scenarios.
Following guide school, training continues for another three months onsite at an explora destination, enabling guides to deepen their knowledge of exploration routes, local culture and history, geomorphology, and more.
Beyond their training, explora guides possess heartfelt enthusiasm for revealing the beauty, culture and mysteries of remote destinations. “Our guides are passionate about their profession and excited to share wonders with travelers who would be hard pressed to access those regions on their own,” notes Romina Da Pieve, Head of Exploration Experiences and previously Head of Guides at explora Patagonia. “Each of our travelers owns their explora experience uniquely. The role of our guides is to lead them to those experiences, reveal the significance of what dwells there, and let travelers fire their own passions through love, understanding, and the thrill of the journey.”
