A Conversation with Hotel AWA’s Expert Guide Daniela Muñoz
Astronauts call it the overview effect—that life-altering jolt you get when you see Earth from above and suddenly everything clicks into perspective. Most of us will never float in orbit, but we chase the same feeling every time we climb higher—especially up volcanoes.
There’s something irresistible about it: the slow burn of the ascent, the transition to the snowy peak, the moment when the clouds finally drop below you. From the top, the world looks rearranged—neater, smaller, more manageable. And for a few glorious minutes, you feel like you’ve found your own version of outer space awe—no rocket required.
Daniela Muñoz, an expert guide at Hotel AWA—a design-forward boutique hotel in Chile’s Lake District—explains what sets volcano excursions apart, why the region’s chain of peaks creates such an unforgettable adventure, and how travelers can prepare before setting out.
What inspired Hotel AWA to introduce these volcano excursions?
Muñoz: At Hotel AWA, we’re always looking for new ways to surprise and inspire our guests. Our goal is to create truly unique and unparalleled experiences – ones you can’t find just anywhere.
Puerto Varas is a region in Chile with a high concentration of volcanoes, and it bears the nickname “City of Volcanoes.” We saw an incredible opportunity to share that natural wonder with our guests.
Climbing a volcano is more than an adventure; it’s a chance to connect with nature, challenge yourself, and take in some of the most breathtaking views imaginable. We knew we had to make that experience part of what we offer.
What might surprise guests about this excursion? Are there any unexpected moments or highlights that tend to stand out?
Hands-down, it is seeing the sunrise from the peak of a volcano.
Most guests don’t expect how stunning that moment can be. It’s truly one of the best views the Lake District has to offer.
What do you think makes volcanoes such powerful destinations for travelers? What do you believe resonates with travelers?
There’s something truly special about standing on top of a volcano. It’s one of those moments that really stays with you.
Climbing to the summit of some of Chile’s most iconic volcanoes, such as Osorno and Casa Blanca, is an unforgettable experience. It’s not just about the adventure. It’s about connecting with a powerful landscape and enjoying views that few people ever get to see.
One highlight is discovering the glacier that covers the top of Osorno Volcano, just one of the many incredible moments AWA guests can experience.
What should guests wear or bring to be prepared appropriately for the volcano excursion?
The weather in the mountains can change quickly, so it’s essential to be ready for anything. For the volcano excursion, we recommend bringing:
- Comfortable, moisture-wicking base layer
- Insulating middle layer (e.g. fleece pullover)
- Hiking pants
- Hiking socks, gloves, and a hat
- A waterproof jacket
- Sturdy mountain boots
